MOCA Is In Trouble!

By mike | November 22, 2008

You might of heard something about how MOCA is having financial problems or something and how Eli Broad took out and ad In the LA Times offering to help if the Board Of Directors “steps up” or something. I dont know its all very textured and complex. Check out these links to learn more.
LA Times
LA Times Blog
Tyler Green’s Modern Art Notes
Speaking of which I know Caryn isn’t around to expound on the virtues of Tyler Greens blog right now but it really is awesome. Its where I found out MOCA’s new exhibition archive is now online. I went to take a look at the Seminal 1992 Helter Skelter Show, which in my opinion hastened LA’s emergence as one of the worlds international hubs of art. I was a little disappointed in the amount of material just 9 photos and virtually no information about the exhibition in terms of its conception or impact. Some of the written material from the catalog, which had contributions from amazing up and coming LA writers or even just the press release would have been nice. Curiously and tantalizingly each show has a “container list” of related materials that MOCA has in its archives such as correspondence with the artists, budgets, loan agreements etc. Why not bust out a containers and put it on display? It would give great insight and a sense of participation into the curatorial process…which would in turn help people relate to the museum better… who might then feel more connected… stay with me… who might then be more likely to want to contribute. Which might come in handy, during say a financial crisis.
